World Cup winner urges Inter Milan to SACK Simone Inzaghi

March 27, 2023

Former Italy international and World Cup winner Alessandro Altobelli has stated that Inter Milan have to sack underachieving coach Simone Inzaghi.

According to the former Inter Milan striker, the San Siro side is not firing on all cylinders, and the fault lies with Inzaghi.

The 46-year-old Italian coach became Inter coach in June 2021, taking over from Antonio Conte, who had just overseen Inter’s first Serie A title win the previous season. Inzaghi joined from Lazio, with whom he had achieved some success by winning the Italian Super Cup (2017 and 2019) and the Coppa Italia (2017).

He also oversaw Lazio’s top-four finish in the 2019/20 season, reaching the round of 16 in the 2020–21 Champions League.

At Inter, things haven’t gone very badly for the former Lazio and Sampdoria striker, overall. After taking over from Conte at San Siro, Inzaghi led Inter to a second-place finish, narrowly missing out on the title to AC Milan. They finished that season as the most prolific attacking side with 84 goals, winning Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia.

However, this season Inter have somewhat struggled. Although they are currently in third position, they are trailing league leaders Napoli by a whopping 21 points with less than a dozen games still to play.

Although Inter has qualified for the quarterfinals round of the Champions League, there are growing calls for Inzaghi’s sacking. One of those keen to see a change of guard at the blue side of San Siro is Altobelli, who believes the coach is not doing enough.

“Inter have a good team, but I am not happy with the results,” Altobelli told Tuttosport.

“You can’t lose nine games out of 27 in Serie A. I also don’t like the fact that they’ve conceded too many goals. The Nerazzurri are not showing their actual worth.

“Inzaghi has won three trophies, and he has qualified for the Champions League quarterfinals, but I still think he should aim for more with this team.”

On who he would like to replace Inzaghi, he also said: “I would be unsure between Conte and Mourinho. I think they are two great coaches, they have already won at Inter, and I am sure they would bring more trophies.”
