REVEALED: Why Lionel Messi travelled to Saudi Arabia after PSG’s loss to Lorient

May 1, 2023

The real reason PSG ace Lionel Messi travelled to Saudi Arabia at the weekend shortly after his side’s shocking loss to Lorient has been revealed, and it has nothing to do with his future.

The Argentina international sent tongues wagging a bit over the weekend when he travelled to Saudi Arabia just a day after Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 3-1 home defeat to Lorient in Ligue 1.

Some fans speculated that the 35-year-old travelled to try to sort out his future and discuss possible contract offers sent by Saudi club sides.

However, a report from French news outlet RMCSport via Sportskeeda has squashed those assumptions. As per the report, Messi’s visit to the Asian nation might be part of his agreement with Saudi Arabia as their tourism ambassador.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who recently won the FIFA World Cup in neighbouring Qatar, signed an ambassadorial contract with the oil-rich Saudi Arabia in 2022.

The 35-year-old posted a picture promoting tourism in Saudi Arabia on his Instagram.

The caption on the post read:

“Who thought Saudi has so much green? I love to explore its unexpected wonders whenever I can.”

The post was made in partnership with Visit Saudi, the official tourism page of the Gulf nation.
