Football is a sport that is played and watched all over the world, but not all stadiums are created equal. Some are more unusual and amazing than others, whether it’s because of their location, design, history or atmosphere. Here are five of the strangest stadiums in football that you have to visit.
1. Stadion Vozdovac – Belgrade, Serbia
This stadium is literally built on top of a shopping mall in the Serbian capital. It has a capacity of 5,175 and is home to FK Vozdovac, a club that plays in the Serbian SuperLiga. The stadium offers a unique view of the city skyline and the surrounding mountains, and also has a rooftop garden and a helipad.
2. Eidi Stadium – Faroe Islands
This stadium is located on a small island in the North Atlantic, and is surrounded by the sea on three sides. It has a capacity of 3,000 and is home to EB/Streymur, a club that plays in the Faroe Islands Premier League. The stadium is often exposed to strong winds and waves, and sometimes even sheep graze on the pitch.
3. Estadio Hernando Siles – La Paz, Bolivia
This stadium is the highest national stadium in the world, at an altitude of 3,637 meters above sea level. It has a capacity of 41,143 and is home to several Bolivian clubs, as well as the national team. The stadium is notorious for its thin air and steep stands, which make it hard for players and fans to breathe.
4. The Float – Singapore
This stadium is the world’s largest floating stage, and is made of steel and anchored to the shore of Marina Bay. It has a capacity of 30,000 and is used for various events, including football matches, concerts and fireworks displays. The stadium offers a stunning view of the Singapore skyline and the water, and also has a movable platform that can be raised or lowered.
5. The Rock Stadium – Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
This stadium is still under construction, but it promises to be one of the most spectacular stadiums in the world. It is designed to be carved into the side of a rocky mountain, and to blend in with the natural landscape. It will have a capacity of 40,000 and will be used for football matches, as well as other sports and cultural events.
