After the departure of club legend Lionel Messi, Barcelona have realized that the squad was too dependent on the Argentine forward. Therefore, they decided to make an entire squad rebuild, bringing in youngsters in place of veterans. One of the club veterans set to leave is Sergio Busquets.
According to La Vanguardia, Sergio Busquets does not plan to continue at Barcelona beyond the summer of 2023 when his contract expires.
Busquets has been a part of the Barcelona side since 2006 and the defensive midfielder has featured in almost 700 competitive matches for the team. He has been a regular starter for almost 15 years and undoubtedly helped the side to many trophies.
The report comes in the midst of rumors swirling around Barcelona’s plans to further lower the salary of the team’s veterans, in light of the ongoing financial crisis. The players, including Busquets, have not approved of the third salary reduction in just the space of months.
Keeping the situation of the club in mind, Sergio Busquets has made the decision to leave the Spanish club in the summer of 2023, with no plans of staying another year in Spain. The Spanish international will join the MLS in USA next season. He is eyeing a move to Inter Miami, the side co-owned by David Beckham.
Even Lionel Messi is expected to acquire the shares of the MLS team, before eventually joining the club. Messi’s current deal at PSG also expires in 2023, and there is a belief the two former Barcelona teammates could be reunited at Inter Miami.
