Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has made a surprising claim about Lionel Messi’s future beyond this summer.
The Argentina ace is one of the most talked about players this period, with his future the centre of attention given that his contract at Parc des Princes will expire in June.
Paris Saint-Germain had initially offered him a chance to stay beyond this summer, but his reluctance to commit to a new deal frustrated the club, so they have now surrendered to losing him this summer.
Former club Barcelona are interested in signing, while Saudi Arabia giants Al-Hilal have also submitted a world-record deal, hoping to lure him to Riyadh.
Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, who former Manchester United attacker David Beckham owns, are also circling, but nothing has been agreed upon yet.
While Barcelona, Al-Hilal, and Inter Miami battle to convince the Argentina ace, ex-Real Madrid chief Ramon Calderon claim that Los Blancos would welcome Messi should he decide to move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to the Spaniard, he would attempt to lure the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to the Spanish capital if he was in Florentino Perez’s place.
Calderon made this claim on the Argentinian radio show Super Deportivo Radio (via Sportskeeda):
“Of course, he is still a professional player,” he said when asked if he would sign Messi for Real Madrid.
“He still has two years to play at the highest level. He is a player that you always have to try to keep close. The great players go where they want. If Messi decided to come to Real Madrid, I’m sure everyone would welcome him with open arms.”
Calderon’s claims come despite Messi’s affiliation with Madrid’s fierce rivals Barcelona for whom he played for 21 years.
