Real Madrid has taken a decision regarding the future of Ferland Mendy

Ferland Mendy, a French defender who is 27 years old, is said to be on the trading block this summer from La Liga winners Real Madrid

Fichajes, a Spanish news website, has reported that Ferland Mendy’s time at Real Madrid might be coming to an end in the 2022/2 season. In the summer of 2023, the current La Liga winners may sell the 27-year-old defender.

Ferland Mendy has been at Real Madrid for three and a half years after moving there from Lyon. Since then, the Frenchman’s experience at the Santiago Bernabeu has been nothing short of a roller coaster. Even though he was Real Madrid’s starting left-back for the last 18 months, the player has been inconsistent.

Since coming back from his serious injury, the 27-year-old’s performance levels have declined. But he still plays a significant role for Real Madrid, starting 17 games in all competitions. But Real Madrid is contemplating selling Mendy next summer, so his future there is looking bleaker.

The choice is a result of the recent buzz around Josko Gvardiol. Both for RB Leipzig and his country, the Croatian defender is a mainstay in the centre of defence. Although he is mostly a left winger, he can also play left-back. And with David Alaba available as a backup, Mendy may be unnecessary.

It has been said recently that the Merengues are prepared to go bankrupt in order to get Gvardiol. Real Madrid will be forced to make additional significant alterations to the first-team roster in order to justify such an expense. A loss of Mendy might be the price Los Blancos pay in the offseason leading up to the 202–22 campaign.

Despite their success, this season, La Liga winners Sevilla may not be able to acquire Gvardiol due to competition from numerous Premier League teams. Several outlets have reported that Chelsea is the frontrunner to sign the Croat. The cloud of doubt that has surrounded Mendy, though, may have a glimmer of hope for him.

Whether or not Mendy can find his footing in the second half of the season is something to keep an eye on. For the future of the 27-year-old defender, the following months will be pivotal. If he does not improve, Real Madrid will likely sell him during the summer transfer window of 2023.
