Real Madrid has identified a 33-year-old goalkeeper as the back-up for Thibuaut Courtois

According to reports, Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer, 33-year-old, has been targeted by La Liga winners Real Madrid as a potential successor for Andriy Lunin

A report from the Spanish media site Defensa Central claims that Real Madrid is interested in signing Yann Sommer. Assuming Andriy Lunin leaves Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2023, Los Blancos will want Borussia Monchengladbach’s 33-year-old goalkeeper Timo Horn.

Before signing with Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2014, Yann Sommer never played for a team outside of Switzerland. As a result of his eight-and-a-half years of experience in goal, the experienced keeper has become one of the finest in the Bundesliga. Additionally, he has been a rock in goal for Switzerland.

The 33-year-old has made 335 appearances for Gladbach, and he has kept 90 clean sheets. This may not be a very great number, but consider that the experienced goalie has not been playing for a prominent team in the Bundesliga. As a result of his play, numerous prestigious teams, notably Real Madrid, have taken notice of Sommer.

There’s a chance that Real Madrid would look for a new goalkeeper during the next summer transfer window. This is because Andriy Lunin’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu is a topic of intense speculation in the media. If the Ukrainian international decides to leave Real Madrid, Los Blancos will need to replace him.

For Real Madrid, Sommer is a stopgap measure at best. The 33-year-old isn’t the finest goalkeeper in the world, but he is one of the best in the Bundesliga and would be a great addition to Real Madrid. Current La Liga champions Real Madrid isn’t the only team interested in signing the Swiss international.

Several other European powerhouses, like Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, have taken notice of Sommer in recent months. However, passing up the chance to play for what is often considered Europe’s best club might prove to be impossible. If David de Gea departs Manchester United, though, the experienced goalkeeper may see an uptick in playing time.

On the other hand, Fernando Pacheco is also on the Merengues’ radar and might be a viable option. So, if Andriy Lunin leaves Santiago Bernabeu next summer, it will be intriguing to see who replaces him on Real Madrid’s roster.
