Former Manchester City wing-back Joao Cancelo speaks on his time at Bayern Munich after the public fallout with his former boss Pep Guardiola.
Joao Cancelo had a promising start with Bayern Munich when he made his debut for the club against Mainze 05 in the DFB-Pokal. Bayern won 4-0 with Cancelo registering his first assist for the club. He also scored when Bayern Munich beat Augsburg 5-2.
But since then, the Portuguese defender has been seen on the sidelines. Former Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann was reportedly discontent with the wing-back and opted to bench him for most of Bayern Munich’s important games including their Champions League fixtures.
The newly sacked Bayern manager wasn’t fond of Cancelo’s attitude on the training pitch. While speaking to a reporter Nagelsmann had this to say about Cancelo,
“There was a training session in which Joao didn’t train as I wanted, but we spoke about it, and that helped him a lot to understand what I want from him”.
He told the reporter that he is one of those players who don’t take certain decisions professionally.
“He wasn’t good that day, because he didn’t like the position he was in. There are players who respond well to it and others that don’t”.
Something similar happened to him at Manchester City. Joao Cancelo was reportedly bitter because of the limited time given on the pitch. And the promising form of Nathan Ake and the 18-year-old Rico Lewis made him even more frustrated.
But thankfully, Joao Cancelo is having a good time in Germany. He told ‘Sabener 51‘ which is the club magazine of Bayern Munich:
“I see my start at Bayern as positive. There’s always a certain adjustment period for footballers. That’s why I tried to integrate myself into the team as quickly as possible, to get to know the teammates & the system”.
Bayern Munich is under a new coach now, Some would say a better one. Thomas Tuchel is known to get the most out of his squad. And it would be interesting to see if he would prioritize the Portuguese amongst the other world-class defenders he has in his squad.
Should Joao Cancelo try and find a place at Bayern or should he set things straight with Pep Guardiola and move back to Manchester City?
