35-year-old PSG superstar Lionel Messi is about to break an astonishing record that would cement him amongst the greatest ever Ligue 1 players of all time.
The Argentine forward joined PSG after his very public fallout with his former club Barcelona. Despite having an off-season in 21-22, Lionel Messi has been sensational this season.
The World Cup winner has bagged 20 goals in all competitions for PSG while 15 of those have come from his impressive Ligue 1 campaign.
But what is truly amazing is his assist record, Lionel Messi could very much break the record for most assists in a Ligue 1 season. The previous record holder is Messi’s compatriot Angel Di Maria who leads the charts with 18 assists back in 15/16.
Lionel Messi has already helped his PSG teammates with 15 assists and is leading the Ligue 1 charts this season. He only needs 4 to break Di Maria’s staggering record.
What’s even sweet is that Lionel Messi would break the record in his farewell season as the Argentine is reportedly leaving PSG at the end of the season to join his former club Barcelona.
Messi’s return to Spanish football is seen as an emotional homecoming. His former teammate Jordi Alba has recently praised Leo if he indeed chooses to return to Barca.
“It is Leo’s decision. Honestly, we haven’t talked about this topic, but it’s clear that in the end, seeing Messi with another shirt other than Barca’s is always weird.”
Jordi Alba added: “In the end, if he wants to and the club wants to, it’s perfect for me. He has been the player with whom I have understood the best on the pitch.”
Lionel Messi has three immediate options to choose from when he leaves PSG. He can either leave Europe to join Inter Miami/Al Hilal or he can stay and return to Laliga in a Barcelona shirt.
