Manchester United dealt another midfield injury blow

Manchester United have been dealt another injury blow in midfield after Marcel Sabitzer sustained an injury while away with the Austrian national team.

According to a statement by the club on Monday, Sabitzer suffered a knee problem while playing for the Austrian team managed by former Man United boss Ralf Rangnick.

His injury will come as a blow for the Red Devils, who are already light in midfield, having lost Casemiro to suspension, and Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen to long-term injuries.

The Bayern Munich loanee was withdrawn towards the end of his side’s 4-1 win over Azerbaijan after scoring twice and providing an assist when proudly wearing the captain’s armband.

The 29-year-old picked up the knee problem in training and had to end his session early. According to a statement by his national team coach, he has been dealing with pain in the region for at least a few days and had to sit out Austria’s 2-1 win over Estonia on Monday.

Sabitzer and Austrian defender Gernot Trauner were forced out of the final training session before the qualifier, with Rangnick revealing both players suffered knocks.

Meanwhile, Ragnick hailed the midfielder’s quality and improvement since sealing his loan move to Manchester United in January.

“Sabi’s performance was outstanding,” said Rangnick to Laola 1.

“You can’t say it any other way. He is simply a player with a lot of quality. I think the change [move] did him good. He is literally flourishing, which is very, very good. He has a lot more confidence than when he was at Bayern Munich.”

Man United fans will be carefully monitoring developments hoping that the midfielder will not miss too many games.

With Casemiro missing after being suspended for four games following his second red card of the season, Sabitzer is one of the options to help fill the void left by the Brazilian’s absence.

However, his fitness status is now unclear with the reported knee injury. If he is not fit to play for Erik ten Hag’s side against Newcastle on Sunday, the “McFred” duo of Scott McTominay and Fred may be selected in midfield.
