Luke Shaw makes a decision on his Manchester United future

March 31, 2023

Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with left-back Luke Shaw over a new four-year contract.

The defender’s current deal at the club runs until the end of next season after United triggered an automatic 12-month extension earlier in this campaign.

But according to a report by 90min, the Red Devils have agreed in principle with the 27-year-old over a new deal that will keep him at the club until he is in his early 30s.

The England international, who, when he joined Man United in 2014 for a £30 million deal, was the most expensive teenager in world football, has had his fair share of ups and downs at Old Trafford.

He suffered a gruesome leg injury in 2015 and almost saw his Man United career end before it even began. However, at 27, he is enjoying his best football at United this season under Erik ten Hag, turning in several impressive performances under the Dutchman.

The defender was part of the team that won the Carabao Cup in February, while United are competing for a top-four place and additional Europa League and FA Cup wins.

Talks have progressed since January, and it is understood that Shaw is satisfied with the terms reached, though it’s unclear when United will officially announce the deal.

The former Southampton player is understood to have won over ten Hag with his attitude and ability to play in different positions.

The 27-year-old has slotted in at left centre-back severally this season, and his coaches believe Shaw may be the most improved player in the United squad since their arrival.

Meanwhile, Shaw is not the only Man United in talks with the club, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and David de Gea also nearing agreement on fresh terms. All three players have found a new lease of life under ten Hag, with Rashford having the best season of his career, scoring 27 goals and nine assists in 44 games for the Red Devils this season.

Diogo Dalot is another player working on new terms with the club.
