Liverpool And Manchester United In Race For The Next Van Dijk

March 10, 2023

Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly in a race to sign the next Virgil van Dijk, with Ajax’s Jurrien Timber and Edson Alvarez the top targets for both clubs. The news comes as no surprise given the pedigree of the two players and the fact that they have been linked with moves to the Premier League in the past.

Sky Germany has reported that Liverpool are interested in the Ajax duo, which includes Jurrien Timber, a player that Van Dijk himself has admitted is better than he was at the same stage of his career.

Van Dijk, who is having a tough campaign so far, has praised Timber for his potential, professionalism, and work ethic. He believes that Jurrien Timber has everything needed to become one of the world’s best defenders.

On the other hand, though, Manchester United are still interested in signing Timber, despite the 21-year-old rejecting a move to Old Trafford last summer. United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to bring the young Dutchman to Manchester, and Timber has left the door open for a potential move this summer.

“Transfer? You never know what crosses your path. This summer I will look at my options and make a decision,” said Timber.

“I feel good at Ajax, that’s important for now. Last summer there was interest, but I chose to stay.”

Given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of some of their defenders, Liverpool may be looking to add another center-back this summer.

While Joel Matip and Nat Phillips have both been connected to moves away from Anfield, Joe Gomez’s performance this season has been a huge cause for concern. The injuries that Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have experienced this season have also added to Liverpool’s inconsistent play.

The potential addition of Timber or Alvarez to Liverpool’s defensive line could add the necessary depth and quality to support the likes of Van Dijk and Konate and strengthen their defense ahead of next season.

However, both Man Utd and Liverpool will have to navigate a competitive market and a range of factors before they can secure the services of the Ajax duo.
