Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United: Liverpool smashed their great rivals by 7 goals to nil in one of the most lopsided match in Premier League history. In a remarkable performance by Jurgen Klopp’s team, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah each scored two goals, and Roberto Firmino added a seventh as United capitulated to their worst ever defeat in the premier league.

After snapping their six-year trophy drought, Erik ten Hag’s team entered the game with an 11-game unbeaten streak. None the less, they were totally outclassed, giving up six goals in the second half in a boisterous atmosphere at the famous old ground.

Cody Gakpo, a former Old Trafford target, finished off Andy Robertson’s flawless pass two minutes before halftime to give Liverpool control of what had been a close game in which Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford had missed good opportunities.

The second half was a tale of pure ecstasy for Liverpool and endless pain for United, beginning after 47 minutes when Darwin Nunez’s header redirected Harvey Elliott’s driving cross past goalkeeper David de Gea.

Three minutes later, Salah deceived Lisandro Martinez into assisting Gakpo for another elegant finish, and then the Egyptian made everyone realise why he was known as United’s tormentor by scoring himself.

Salah scored high past De Gea to end a quick counterattack, and Nunez added another goal from Jordan Henderson’s pass to add on the misery.

Salah sneaked in the sixth goal to surpass Robbie Fowler’s record of 129 goals to become Liverpool’s highest ever premier league goalscorer.

Roberto Firmino, who has confirmed he will leave Anfield at the end of the current campaign, gave the game a perfect end by making it 7-0 from close range.

Liverpool are now in contention for a place in the Champions League, behind Tottenham by three points with a game in hand.

 

 Jurgen Klopp: “Top performances”

“I said before the game that United have been playing a super season and we are not really happy with our season so far, but it didn’t really mean anything before the game. It was a very important three points for us, so it was good.”

“First half it got a bit wild. But we scored an incredible goal, what a finish…second half, start pretty good and the finish was pretty good.”

“It’s important that we really perform and all the guys come on and score, Bobby comes on and scores. Diogo [Jota] could have scored. All top performances. It was perfect. Everybody has to feel us, everybody has to know we are still around. That’s what we have to be from now on.”

 

Eric Ten Hag: “This is not Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag called the team’s second-half performance “unprofessional” and stated there will be a serious discussion about the humiliating loss.

He said: “The second half was unprofessional. It can’t happen and we have to talk about it. It was about the whole team, I saw 11 individuals losing their heads. That is not Manchester United, we have higher standards”
