Lionel Messi sets another INCREDIBLE 2022-23 season record with assist in PSG win

May 22, 2023

PSG attacker Lionel Messi has set a new unique record after providing another assist in his side’s win over Auxerre on Sunday.

The mercurial Argentina international registered his 20th assist in all competitions this season, finding his teammate Kylian Mbappe in the eighth minute to open the scoring in PSG’s 2-1 victory on Sunday.

The assist made Messi the only player across Europe’s top five leagues to score and assist 20 goals this season.

His contribution came at a crucial time for PSG, as the win moved them to 84 points in Ligue 1  after 36 games. They are close to securing the Ligue 1 title as they now have a six-point lead over second-placed side Lens with two games left to play.

So far, only Kylian Mbappe (48) have had more goal contributions for PSG than Lionel Messi (40).

The 35-year-old has scored 20 goals across all competitions for Les Parisiens this season, with 15 coming in the Ligue 1, one in the Trophee des Champions, and four in the UEFA Champions League.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner also showed his playing-making abilities for PSG this campaign with 16 assists in Ligue 1 and four in the Champions League, totalling 20 assists.

His performance against Auxerre also ticked another massive milestone in the career of the legendary forward, as he has now registered a combined total of 300 assists in his club career.

Despite his already impressive number at Parc des Princes this season, there still seems to be a huge uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.
