Lionel Messi was ‘SMILING’ as he left the PSG pitch for the last time after being booed for missing a chance

June 4, 2023

When Lionel Messi moved to Paris in July 2021, it was anticipated that he would absolutely rule the Ligue 1 “Farmer’s League,” but it hasn’t been that simple for him.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner did improve in his second season in France, but despite winning the league, the squad didn’t advance past the round of 16 in the Champions League and hasn’t dominated the competition as many would anticipate.

When it was eventually announced earlier this week that the World Cup winner would be leaving the team after their final game on Saturday, it didn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone.

The 35-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to the Middle East just weeks earlier when the club punished him for travelling to Saudi Arabia and skipping training.

Fans had already booed him after the team’s Champions League elimination, and they similarly “welcomed” him back with boos after his suspension.

During the 3-2 loss to Clermont Foot at home on Saturday, he once again received a bad reception from the fans.

After 21 minutes, Christophe Galtier’s team led 2-0, but the opposition drew even just before halftime. Following the interval, Kylian Mbappe’s fantastic run set up Lionel Messi for the ideal opportunity, but he missed it, drawing boos from the crowd.

It is understandable why Lionel Messi appeared to be enjoying his departure given that it meant he would leave the team with one final defeat and one final wave of jeers.

As he left the field at the conclusion of the game for the final time as a PSG player, the former Barcelona star could be seen grinning to himself.
