In Lille’s 3-3 draw with Lyon, the Canadian international scored a hat-trick to surpass Eden Hazard, the club’s all-time leading scorer this century with 53 goals, and go to the top of Ligue 1’s goal charts.
Among the top five European leagues this season, only Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has more League goals than David. The 23-year-old has one more Ligue 1 goal than Kylian Mbappe of PSG with 19 goals overall.
On breaking a Lille record on Friday evening, David said: “This isn’t something I set out to do, but it feels great.
“I have a lot of respect for Eden Hazard as a player, and to have broken his record here at home is very special.”
When asked about future move to England or Spain, he said: “Saturday mornings growing up in Canada were about the Premier League and La Liga. Premier League and La Liga are every kid’s dream.”
Before moving to Lille, David began his professional career at Gent, where he made 83 appearances and amassed 37 goals and 15 assists.
In 125 appearances in all competitions for his French team, the striker has amassed 53 goals and nine assists, including three Champions League goals in eight games.
David scored 13 goals in the league to help Lille win the Ligue 1 title in 2020–21.
