Leeds United is working hard to sign Barcelona wonder kid Ilias Akhomach on a pre-contract. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Leeds United is the team that has made the most progress in negotiations to sign the Spanish youngster, who has decided not to renew his contract with the La Liga leaders.
Javi Gracia’s side is currently in negotiations with Ilias and despite interest from other Premier League clubs, the 18-year-old is showing a preference for a transfer to Elland Road. However, Ilias’ management has made it clear that Leeds must steer clear of relegation to the Championship this season, but they may consider re-visit the negotiations if that condition is not met.
His contract with Blaugruana expires at the end of the season and with him not showing intention to commit further, Leeds could sign him for free.
A La Masia similar to the likes of Gavi, Akhomach is a highly rated player by those within Camp Nou and has been a regular for Barca Athletic coach Rafa Marquez this season and made his senior debut against Espanyol in November 2021.
The failure to retain one of their brightest prospects and let him go is seen as a mjor blunder by many in Spain. Consequently, the director of La Masia may face repercussions for the oversight.
Accompanying Leeds United as leading contenders is AC Milan who showed similar enthusiasm to take advantage of Barcelona’s mistake. Although Milan had been in discussions with Akhomach and his representatives, it seems that Leeds United will emerge as the winners in the competition for the young player’s signature.
According to Goal, Barcelona was trying to negotiate “training rights” which is a form of compensation for a homegrown player who is signed at the age of 21 or younger. They were also exploring a scope to insert a sell-on clause. However, it appears that regardless of the specific terms of the agreement, one thing is becoming evident- Akhomach will be playing in West Yorkshire next season.
