Gerard Pique REJECTED an invitation to be part of Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations

May 16, 2023

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique reportedly rejected the invitation of his former teammates to join in celebrating their La Liga win through the city streets on Monday.

The Blaugrana secured their 27th La Liga title on Sunday, thanks to a 4-2 win over city rivals Espanyol away from home. After clinching the title on Sunday, Xavi’s side celebrated the win with their fans through an open-top bus parade the following day.

According to a report by the Mirror, the club had extended an invitation to ex-player Pique to join them in the parade. But the Spaniard, who only retired from professional football this season, declined the offer.

The 36-year-old began the season with Barcelona, making ten appearances for the Bluagrana in all competitions. But he announced his decision to retire from club football in November, cancelling his contract at the Camp Nou.

His decision reportedly helped the cash-strapped Catalan club save £46 million, considering Pique’s deal was due to expire in the summer of 2024.

Having played six times in La Liga this season, he is eligible to receive a La Lia medal and was considered part of the team, hence the invitation to join the celebration.

Pique won every major club and international football trophy in his storied career. This is his ninth Spanish La Liga title as a player. Only Paco Gento (12), Pirri (10) and Lionel Messi (10) have won more than the Spaniard.
