Gary Neville claims Wout Weghorst has brought ‘MORE PROFIT’ to Man United than Cristiano Ronaldo

April 4, 2023

Gary Neville has once again defended Wout Weghorst despite a poor performance against the Magpies. Manchester lost 2-0 against Newcastle on Sunday. The loss not only pushed the Reds off the third spot but jeopardized their top 4 chances.

Wout Weghorst once again came under fire for his lack of attacking abilities. Stats suggest that Weghorst only registered 10 touches throughout the game until he was subbed off in the 62nd minute of the match.

Gary Neville has always been loyal to his Manchester United player. And he has been a huge admirer of Wout Weghorst despite the lack of goals he scored in the Premier League.

His loyalty was put to the test once again by Jamie Carragher. The former Liverpool legend mocked Neville during their live debate on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.

To stress his point the former Manchester United captain previewed stats that picture Wout Weghost and Cristiano Ronaldo in their last 19 games for United.

“I called him a placeholder because United didn’t invest in a striker United would want. This experiment has to stop, Weghorst has to come out, it can no longer go on, the reason he continues to play and why Ronaldo is no longer at the club, you see his 19 starts against Ronaldo’s 19 starts.”

Neville added: “Weghorst has 12 wins, four draws, three defeats, he has only scored two goals but the team has scored 37 goals, with Ronaldo it was 19 starts, they won three less games, drawn three, lost four more with him in the team, he scored 11 but the team itself only scored 23, they are massive differences. It is the strangeness of football is having a player who isn’t good enough to be a Manchester United forward but has brought more profit to the team.”

This is when Jamie Carragher saw the opportunity and took a cheeky dig at his Premier League rival.

Carragher: “I just think 12 months ago you were calling him (Ronaldo) the greatest player of all time.”

To which Neville replied: I believe he (Ronaldo) is the greatest player of all time.”

Jamie Carragher went on the punish Neville on his stance on Cristiano Ronaldo till the ads break.

Wout Weghorst’s season at Manchester United has seen its ups and downs. On one hand, the Dutch striker has scored only 2 goals in his 19 appearances for Manchester United, on the other, the striker is an integral part of the United team that won the Carabao Cup, is in the semifinals of the FA cup, quarter-final of the Europa League and sits in top 4 of the Premier League.

It seems that Ten Hag likes Wout Weghorst and will continue to pick the Dutch striker in the first team until Manchester United goes all out for a striker in the summer transfer window.
