The current gala for the FIFA The Best awards ceremony, now in its seventh year, will be held in Paris and will feature well-known athletes competing for the top honor, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema, Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski, and Kevin De Bruyne.
But, it appears that the winner for the 2022 competition has already been selected, as Messi will reportedly take home the trophy, according to journalist Francesc Aguilar.
He claims that Messi’s win will send a message to France Football and L’Equipe after the Argentine sensation wasn’t even nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year, which was won for the first time by Karim Benzema.
He wrote: “Lionel Messi is The Best. On Monday, FIFA will remind L’Equipe and France Football that they did not include Leo among the candidates for the Ballon d’Or. To make matters worse, FIFA will hold The Best gala in…Paris!”
If this information is indeed true, it will be the second time Lionel Messi has achieved the FIFA The Best award, having already won it in 2019.
The 35-year-old forward has had an almost perfect year. He scored seven times for Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2022, including two in the final against France.
And for Paris Saint-Germain, Leo Messi has performed superbly this season after a difficult first campaign, scoring 16 times and assisting 14 in 27 appearances in all competitions.
