May 9, 2023

Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello says there is only one player who is better than Lionel Messi as he ditched Manchester City’s Erling Haaland for the Ballon d’Or debate.

As the football season is coming to an end, discussion surrounding the 2023 Ballon d’Or favorite is getting heated. The two players who are regarded as having the best chance of winning are Manchester City striker Erling Halland and Paris Saint Germain forward Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi who recently became a world champion is en route to winning the Ligue 1 title. He also has numerous individual awards to his name this season.

However, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland isn’t that far behind. The Norwegian Monster has already bagged a staggering number of goals this season for City. With 48 goals and 7 assists, Erlling Haaland is successfully leading Manchester City to a treble. They are in the semi-final of the Champions League, the final of the FA Cup, and on top of the Premier League.

But, legendary football manager Fabio Capello has chosen French international Kylian Mbappe as the current best player in the world right now.

The Italian manager said that despite not having the magic of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe still excels in all areas.

“Messi has done what he has done throughout his career and over so many years and he is fantastic. He has been the best for several years. But at the moment Mbappe is better. He’s strong, he’s quick, he’s scores goals. Even if he doesn’t have the magic of Messi.”

Fabio Capello also shared his opinion on the latest transfer rumors surrounding Lionel Messi. The football manager said that the 35-year-old is going to Saudi Arabia either to ‘push’ football or to make big bucks.

“Messi will be happy wherever he decides to go. He’s not the best for me at this moment – but before he was the best.‌ If he wants to go to Barcelona, he goes to Barcelona, if he goes to Saudi Arabia, he goes to push the football or for the money.”

Capello added: “He said he wants to play in the next World Cup. And the Argentina manager said the same. This decision will be very important for him.”

Lionel Messi has only a few fixtures left in his PSG career. A move to Saudi club Al Hilal or a return to Barcelona seems to be the two strongest options for the Argentine.
