During his first season in the Saudi Pro League, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has made a bizarre claim about the level at which the league will be operating at.
Speaking to reporters recently, Cristiano Ronaldo insisted that his new league could become one of the most competitive in the world of club football.
“I think you should look at the [Saudi Pro League] in a different way. I’m not going to say that the league is a Premier League, that would be a lie,” he said.
“But it’s a very competitive league that I’m positively surprised by, a very balanced league and good teams. I am sure that in the coming years the league will be…the fourth, fifth or sixth most competitive league in the world.”
Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the Saudi Pro League
After having a unexpectedly bad start of his comeback to Old Trafford, things were not looking good for the striker at Manchester United. He had a falling out with manager Erik Ten Hag and the other coaching staff. To make things worse, he gave an explosive interview to Piers Morgan against the owners and staff of Manchester United. That was considered the last straw.
Cristiano Ronaldo tried to make way into a big club playing in the Champions League. However, he was once again without an offer from any major European sides, and so agreed to join Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr at the end of December.
There is no doubt that the arrival of Ronaldo to the Saudi Pro League will push other big stars to join the league as well. This will in turn, increase the level of football in the region.
