Chelsea take huge step in attempt to sign Barcelona midfielder Gavi

April 11, 2023

Chelsea have reportedly met with the agent of Barcelona midfielder Gavi over a potential move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Spanish teenager is one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in the world and is attracting interest from several clubs, including Chelsea. Since bursting onto the scene as a 16-year-old in August 2021, Gavi has gone from strength to strength at Camp Nou.

He and fellow central midfielder Pedri have been seen as essential to Barcelona’s future rebuild under Xavi after several high-profile departures.

However, Barca could lose Gavi next summer as it has emerged that Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City are all interested in signing him.

The Premier League giants have admired Gavi for a while, although chances of tempting him away from the Catalan giants appeared remote. Yet, the interested clubs have been encouraged by Barcelona’s disagreement with La Liga over Gavi’s contract, which is the situation that led to Lionel Messi’s departure from the club in 2021.

According to Diario AS, Chelsea are already putting the groundwork together to sign the player. The Blues sporting director Christopher Vivell met with Gavi’s agent, Ivan de la Pena, several weeks ago in Madrid to communicate that they wanted to sign the Spain international this summer.

As per the report, the meeting went well, and another is scheduled in the coming weeks as Chelsea seeks to advance talks.

the Stamford Bridge side are prepared to make the player a large offer that would likely outstrip the deal he signed at Barcelona last year, and the deal could include a significant signing-on fee.

Moreover, should former Spain manager Luis Enrique take charge in west London as suggested, Gavi would be signing for one of his greatest admirers.
