Championship leading Burnley handed Transfer Embargo by EFL

March 13, 2023

The English Football League has imposed a transfer embargo on Burnley, only three months before the window reopens.

The Lancashire team leads the championship by 13 points and appears to be guaranteed a quick return to the Premier League. The club asserted in a statement that the matter should be settled right away.

Burnley attributed the penalty levied by the EFL to the late submission of their accounts due to a change in auditor.

“We would like to communicate with our supporters the regrettable news that the EFL are placing the club under an immediate transfer embargo,” said a statement on the team website.

“We can confirm that we have provided draft accounts and financial information to the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit and we continue to have regular dialogue with the unit to ensure we remain as open and as transparent [as we can] and answer any questions the League may have.

What does it mean for Burnely?

Burnley is 17 points ahead of Middlesbrough in third place, so the transfer ban is unlikely to have any bearing on their attempt to move up the Premier League. Kompany will want the problem addressed by the summer so that he can construct a team capable of remaining in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche’s six-year tenure as manager of Burnley ended in May of last year. After the club lost 2-1 against Newcastle on the season’s final day, Mike Jackson, his interim replacement, was unable to save the team from relegation.

When Kompany was announced as Dyche’s permanent success last summer, questions were raised yet, the Belgian has excelled at Turf Moor.
