Barcelona target out-of-favour Manchester City defender

May 8, 2023

Barcelona are reportedly looking to sign Manchester City’s João Cancelo this summer.

The Catalan side are looking to strengthen their right-back position and sees the City star, who is on loan at Bayern Munich as the ideal candidate.

The Portuguese is also interested in the move to Camp Nou after growing frustrated with life at Allianz Arena.

According to Spanish outlet Sport via Sportsbible, Cancelo is uninterested in remaining at Bayern past the 2022/23 campaign and has asked his agent to secure a move elsewhere. Although he can return to the Etihad, he does not want a reunion with Pep Guardiola after the pair reportedly fell out in training.

Sport claim that Cancelo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been meeting with Barca’s representatives to discuss a temporary loan switch involving Cancelo. As per the report, the 28-year-old could join Barca for the entirety of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign.

Furthermore, the supposed loan deal would include a purchase option in the summer of 2024. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s coach, Xavi, is already a ‘huge admirer’ of Cancelo and believes the 28-year-old could be the player that would help propel the club to new heights.

Cancelo’s contract at Manchester City runs till 202 7 after he committed to a new deal last year in February.

After committing to fresh terms last year, the Portuguese said: “Manchester City is a fantastic club, so I am incredibly happy to have signed this new agreement.

“City players have everything they need to reach their full potential, with amazing facilities, world-class teammates and an incredible manager who pushes us every single day.

“There is nowhere better to play football, and it’s a pleasure to work here,” he continued.

“I have so much I want to achieve before my career ends… This new contract means I now have complete focus on improving my game and winning more trophies with this team.”

He joined City from Juventus in 2019 and made 154 appearances for the Cityzens in all competitions.
